In 1956, world famous scuba diver Jacques Cousteau put Cozumel "on the map," so to speak, when he began to share with the world the infinite beauty of this island's ocean reef system. Countless others have followed in his footsteps, making Cozumel one of the busiest dive destinations in the world. And because the island is almost totally supported by tourism, they take having fun very seriously!

Today, a multitude of activities await the droves of tourists who flock here year round. There's never really an 'off-season' to come here, as the weather is fairly consistent, regardless of season. Whether you're into diving, shopping, snorkeling, or sightseeing, Cozumel has plenty to keep you busy.

If diving's your passion, you've come to the right spot -- with the world's second largest barrier reef system, Cozumel won't disappoint scuba divers, new and seasoned veterans alike. Reef systems are sprinkled along the entire western side of the island, from north to south. The area enjoys a contstant ocean current, which feeds the reef system with nutrients and allows it to thrive. Visibility is often unparalleled, reaching the 200-foot range at times.

For those not looking to 'dive so deep' into Cozumel's offshore offerings, snorkeling excursions will offer a very good look at the tropical life surrounding this island. One of best ways to enjoy this experience is by visiting Chankanaab National Park, on the south end of the island. Chankanaab is only a few minutes away from the cruise terminal by taxi, or you can book an excursion with your cruise line for a visit to this beautiful place.

Another don't-miss opportunity at Chankanaab National Park is Dolphin Discovery, your chance to spend some close-up time with these amazing saltwater mammals -- be prepared to be hugged, kissed and performed for! This experience is available at an extra fee beyond normal park entry.

If soaking in saltwater isn't your thing, you'll be amazed at the beauty of this park above water as well. There is a botanical and archaeological area on the grounds, several replicas of Mayan statues and artifacts, and of course, a beach offering a gorgeous view of the Mexican caribbean. Also available is a very nice, air-conditioned shopping area.

And, speaking of shopping, did we mention the shopping downtown? As soon as you leave your ship, your shopping experience will begin. Right off of the cruise piers, you'll find a host of shopping opportunities available, no taxi required. Bear in mind that in Mexico it is common to be able to 'barter' with these vendors, and get what you're looking for at a fraction of what the listed prices are. Many folks make a day of shopping at this port, taking a taxi if necessary to get into the main part of San Miguel. If your cruise line offers some type of 'briefing' on what to look for while shopping in Cozumel, it's a good idea to attend these before you set out -- many times they will be able to give you 'coupons' for special offers at select retailers in Cozumel.

If you'd like to explore the island as much as possible, check with your cruise line and see if they're offering something like a 'dune buggy excursion' that will allow you to see more of Cozumel. We took one of these on our last trip to Cozumel, and it allowed us to see the coastline of Cozumel from west to east, north to south. We were also given lunch at a beach on the east side of the island as part of this excursion, no extra charge!

Of course, there are a myriad of other things to see and do while in Cozumel...check with your cruise line to see what other excursions they're offering. Just be sure to get your siestas over the night before, there'll be no time for snoozing on this stop!
